Arpio Architects , winner of the international competition organized by the Embassy of France and the AEFE, rethinks the Lycée Descartes in Rabat and develops a concept based on the traditional house based on a central patio sometimes planted to manage the light, wind and sunshine. Aiming for energy efficiency and sustainability, to create optimal thermal and acoustic comfort that will serve the well-being of its students as well as that of its teachers.
The three discontinuous and distinct parallelepipedic shapes of this project make it possible to house the three main functions of the new extension of Lycée René Descartes. The passageways, in well-being spaces for winter and summer students, surround the patio and distribute the classrooms in double orientation. For better management of the sun in Rabat, the east and west facades of the three new buildings are fitted with vertical sun shades in white prefabricated fiber-reinforced concrete as a second skin. In addition, a system of facades unites the entire project, forming a coherent whole that underlines the pre-existing building dating from 1963.
